Of the 38 injured employees, four are in critical condition at area hospitals with life-threatening burns covering between forty and sixty percent of their bodies. Others are being treated for serious injuries, including burns, broken bones, cuts, bruises and respiratory complaints.

The 500,000 square foot plant is one of ConAgra's largest, employing about 900 individuals. Approximately 300 workers were on duty at the time of the blast. The company has 25,000 employees worldwide, and produces several well known brands including Chef Boyardee, Hunt's tomato Sauce, ACT II popcorn, and Hebrew National hot dog products.

According to several news reports, the North Carolina plant was last inspected in July 2008. Though no violations were issued at that time, the plant has had previous violations, including a fine in 2007 involving problems with eye and face protective equipment.
